The Escort Project

Our debut build — a Ford Escort Van Mk6 transformed with dual Tesla Performance motors and a split VW MEB battery pack for optimal weight distribution.

Ford Escort EV engine bay — split battery pack design

Split battery pack design for the Ford Escort conversion

Build Specification

Base Vehicle Ford Escort Van Mk6
Battery VW ID.3 MEB Modules (Split Pack)
Front Motor Tesla Model 3 Performance
Rear Motor Tesla Model 3 Performance
Rear Suspension Fully Custom Design
Front Suspension OEM Subframe Retained

Build Overview

The battery pack is split between the rear load bed and the front bonnet area, keeping weight distribution balanced. The rear end features a fully custom-designed subframe picking up on original suspension points, while the front motor utilises the original subframe and suspension geometry.

Using dual Tesla Model 3 Performance motors — one front, one rear — the Escort becomes a true AWD performance machine. Each motor is controlled independently, giving precise torque vectoring capability that the original vehicle could never have achieved.

The VW ID.3 MEB modules were chosen for their proven reliability, high energy density and accessibility of second-life cells. Split across the front and rear of the vehicle, they achieve near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution — a significant engineering challenge in a van platform that inherently favours rear weight.

Engineering Highlights

Split Pack Architecture

MEB modules split between front bonnet area and rear load bed achieves near-perfect weight distribution. Each sub-pack has its own BMS integration with shared high-level vehicle controller.

Custom Rear Subframe

A fully bespoke rear subframe was designed and fabricated from scratch, picking up on all original suspension mounting points while accommodating the rear Tesla motor and MEB battery modules.

AWD Performance

Dual independent motors provide all-wheel drive with individual torque control front and rear. The original Escort platform is transformed into a genuine performance machine with the character it always deserved.

OEM Geometry Retained

The front motor installation uses the original Ford subframe and suspension pickup points throughout. The Escort's factory front suspension geometry is completely preserved, maintaining the vehicle's original handling character.

Proven Cell Chemistry

VW ID.3 MEB modules bring proven real-world EV chemistry with excellent energy density. These modules are well-documented, have established BMS protocols, and offer a strong balance of performance, longevity and cost.

Full Thermal Management

Both battery sub-packs and both motor/inverter units are liquid cooled. The thermal management system was designed to handle sustained high-power operation while keeping all components within their optimal temperature ranges.
